family weekend in charleston, Sc: college visit, shopping, and delicious food
I took my teenage sons for a family weekend in Charleston, SC for a college visit, beaches, shopping, and to explore great food. Our family trip to Charleston, South Carolina, was meant to be a college visit, but it turned into so much more. We stayed right in the heart of downtown Charleston at the Francis Marion Hotel on King Street.
What we discovered was a weekend packed with unforgettable food, waterfront sunsets, beach breezes, and Southern charm that left all of us saying, “Let’s come back soon.”

King Street: A Shopper’s Dream
Staying on King Street downtown Charleston at the Francis Marion Hotel was a perfect choice. It was historic, elegant, and just steps away from everything we wanted to explore. From our room, we had gorgeous views of the city and easy access to King Street’s best shopping. Trendy boutiques, upscale brands, local art galleries, and charming bookstores filled our afternoons.
My sons loved checking out mens clothing shops and sports stores, while I browsed through fashion finds and home decor treasures. King Street is a lively and stylish downtown area, boasting a mix of Southern sophistication and modern flair.

Visiting the Downtown Historic Charleston City Market
A trip to Charleston wouldn’t be complete without a stroll through the Historic Charleston City Market, one of the oldest public markets in the country, dating back to the early 1800s.
Steeped in history, the market once served as a hub for local farmers and artisans, and today it continues that tradition with dozens of vendors offering handmade goods, sweetgrass baskets, sweetgrass grass woven roses, local art, and delicious Lowcountry snacks.
As we wandered through the open air market and enclosed hall, we soaked in the rich culture and craftsmanship unique to Charleston. It’s the perfect place to find a meaningful souvenirs, chat with local artists, and get a true sense of the city’s vibrant community and heritage.
Charleston also has a vibrant outdoor market every Saturday in Marion Square. You can find fresh local produce, live music, and dining.

Watching the Sunrise at the Isle of Palms
On our last morning, we woke up early and took a peaceful drive out to the Isle of Palms to catch the sunrise, and it was absolutely worth it. The quiet roads in the early morning light made for a calming start to the day. As we arrived, the sky was already starting to glow with soft shades of pink and orange.
Standing on the beach with our toes in the cool sand, we watched the sun slowly rise over the Atlantic. Charleston sunrises are as beautiful as Charleston sunsets casting golden light across the water and creating a moment of pure stillness. It was one of those simple yet unforgettable experiences that made our trip feel even more special.

Exploring the College of Charleston
The main reason for our family trip was visiting the College of Charleston, and it truly exceeded expectations. The campus feels like it was pulled from a Southern novel with historic buildings, fountains, oak shaded walkways, and a welcoming energy throughout.

My oldest son could really picture himself walking to class, grabbing coffee from a local café, and being part of its vibrant downtown campus. Touring the college gave us a deeper appreciation for Charleston’s blend of education, culture, and beauty.

The Battery and Waterfront Strolls
No visit to Charleston is complete without a walk along The Battery. We spent a peaceful afternoon strolling past the grand historic antebellum homes, gazing out at the harbor, and soaking in the sea breeze. With views of Fort Sumter, swaying palmettos, and the sound of water gently lapping against the seawall, it was a quiet moment of reflection during an otherwise active trip. We were also pleasantly surprised to see a dolphin swimming at the end of the pier.

After our walk, we wandered over to The Griffon, a cozy pub style restaurant just one block from The Battery. It’s one of those local gems that makes you smile the second you walk in, the walls are entirely covered in dollar bills, each one signed or doodled on by previous guests.
My sons thought it was the coolest thing. We enjoyed burgers, fries, and a laid back vibe that made us feel like regulars, even though it was our first visit.

Lowcountry Bites: Food That Made the FAmily Trip
Let’s talk about the food. Charleston is a foodie’s culinary dream. From casual cafes to elevated dining, we were constantly impressed. We indulged in fresh seafood, creamy grits, biscuits so good they might make you cry, and sweet treats like pralines and homemade ice cream. The city is packed with flavor and warmth, both in the food and the people who serve it.

Folly Beach: Sunshine, Sand, and Easy Vibes
We couldn’t visit Charleston without a day trip to Folly Beach. There are several other beaches within a short drive. It’s just a short drive from downtown, but it felt like a vacation within a vacation. The boys played football in the sand while I relaxed with a coffee and a good book.
Folly beach has that effortlessly cool, laid back energy, with surf shops, taco stands, and beach bars lining the streets. It was the perfect way to balance our city exploring with some sun soaked downtime. We also enjoyed live music at a local seafood restaurant.

Mount Pleasant & Shem Creek Sunsets
One of our favorite evenings was spent across the Ravenel Bridge in Mount Pleasant, where we had dinner at Shem Creek’s Tavern & Table. The vibe was cozy and coastal, and the food was unforgettable, especially the fresh seafood dishes and small plates designed for sharing.
But the real star of the night? The sunset. We watched as the sky turned shades of peach and lavender, casting reflections across the water as boats drifted by. It was the kind of moment that made the whole trip feel cinematic. We enjoyed the sunset on the pier and watched fishermen and boats as the sun set.

family weekend in Charleston, We’ll Be Back soon
What started as a college visit turned into one of our favorite family getaways. Charleston gave us everything – history, flavor, beauty, and a sense of place that’s hard to put into words.
Whether we were wandering the College of Charleston campus, hunting for souvenirs on King Street, grabbing burgers under a ceiling of dollar bills at The Griffon, or watching the sun slip below the horizon on Shem Creek, it was all unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back, and maybe next time, as a college parent.
